Hemorriods, pronounced hemroids, are swollen veins in the rectum or anus. They are commonly called piles. Although hemorrhoids are not dangerous, they can be embarrassing. Hemorrhoids are responsible for anal bleeding, itching and discomfort.

Hemorrhoids can be internal, prolapsed or external, depending on where they occur. Internal hemorriods are found at the beginning of the anal canal. Prolapsed hemorrhoids stretch out till they bulge out of the anus and can go back on their own. They can also be pushed back inside. External hemorrhoids are located at the anal opening and can be there without being noticed over a long period of time until bleeding takes place.

Hemorriods may be caused by constipation and strain during bowel movements due to increased pressure in the anal or rectal veins.
Factors such as a low fiber diet, prolonged sitting or standing, obesity, heavy lifting or strenuous activity, pregnancy, loss of muscle as result of old age or rectal surgery and anal intercourse may contribute to hemorriods.

Some of the symptoms of hemorriods are; pain, itching or mucus discharge following bowel movement, feeling a tender lump on the edge of the anus, a sensation that the rectum has not emptied completely after a bowel and the appearance of bright red blood as small stains on toilet paper following bowel movement.

Should you experience any or all of these symptoms, your guess is as good as mine! There is every possibility that you have hemorriods. No cause for alarm.

The Five Simple and Effective Ways to Treat and Prevent the Pains of Hemorrhoids are: * Avoid constipation. This you can do by including more fiber in your diet. Regularly take fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, and whole-grain breads and cereals.
Drink plenty of water-taking 8 glasses of water per day is okay and exercise regularly. Do not delay to go to the toilet when you feel the need to have a bowel movement.

* Clean your anus gently with soft moist paper or moistened pad such as baby wipes after each bowel movement.

* Take warm bath and sit in 8-10 inches of hot water for 10-20 minutes for several times a day.

* Apply ice packs to relieve swelling. In the case of prolapsed hemorriods, you may need to stay in bed for a day and apply the ice packs to the anal area for 20 minutes an hour for a maximum of 3 hours per day.

* Apply over- the -counter or prescription creams that contain hydrocortisone to take care of itching, discomfort, pain and reduce swelling. Use tylenol, motrin or aspirin to relive pain.
